A POEM FOR "THE WONDER OF LIFE" BY PETER WOLRICH [WRITTEN AFTER LISTENING TO RÉGIS CAMPO'S ”THE WONDER OF LIFE” FOR ORCHESTRA AND ”LES TIERCES JOYEUSES” FOR PIANO PLAYED BY JAY GOTTLIEB]

Beyond Two States of Being

by Peter Wolrich

[written after listening to Régis Campo's ”The Wonder of Life” for orchestra and ”Les Tierces Joyeuses” for piano played by Jay Gottlieb]

I.

[to be read very slowly, like a chant]

Long   long   long   long
and  long   long   long,
stretch  reach  grow  increase,
slow   slow   slow   and   slower,
softly approaching the nub of Being,
the ultimate seat
of joyous stillness,
still   still   still   so   still
where now is ever
with ever to ever for ever
the finite is infinite
time is suspended
all is transcended
and appears to be

           One,

long   long   and   longer.

II.

[to be read quickly, rhythmically]

Short
Quick
Pulse
Flash
Beeps
Leaps.

Here we fly
in intense interaction
with all that happens
and may not happen,
movable world
kaleidoscope whirl
nothing but

      CHANGE

quick  quick
and everywhere quicker.

III.

[to be read thoughtfully]

One above
the other
in counterpoint free
these two states
do co-exist
within us,

and thus may the contests
of stillness and strife
infuse and inspire us
with the wonder of life.

IV.
still   still   still  and  still

quick
quick
and ever
quicker

All is ONE?

All is CHANGE?

- - - - - - -

Beyond the limits
of states of being

All is

ALL
